How Budget Advisor Works

Budget Advisor reverse-searches every car model, variant, and year in our database — surfacing what you can actually buy at fair market value within your range, and what condition to expect at that price.

1 The Reverse Search

Most car searches work forward — you pick a model, then check the price. Budget Advisor works in reverse: you set your budget, and our XGBoost model predicts what condition each model–variant–year combination would need to be in to land within your price range at fair market value.

We search across 26 models and 143 trim variants, generating a fair price for every combination, then filter to those whose fair price (across all four condition levels) overlaps your budget range.

2 The Four Condition Levels

Each result shows a price grid for all four conditions. This tells you exactly what the same car is worth depending on its actual state when you inspect it.

★ Excellent

Inspection scores are above par for the car's age and category. Minimal wear, well-maintained. Expect to pay close to the asking price — very little negotiation room.

✓ Good

Scores at or near par. Normal wear for age. A good candidate — fair price applies the standard negotiation buffer plus small condition discounts.

⚠ Fair

Below par on one or more sections. Visible wear or minor issues. Larger condition discounts apply — the car must be priced lower to be fair value, or inspected carefully before buying.

✕ Poor

Significantly below par. Needs repairs or has major wear. The fair price reflects steep discounts. Only worth buying if priced well below market and you account for repair costs.

3 How Results Are Ranked by Default

Without Lifestyle Matching active, results are sorted by two criteria applied in sequence:

1
Condition rank

Excellent condition cars appear first, then Good, then Fair, then Poor. A newer car in excellent condition is genuinely a better buy than an older one in poor condition at the same price — so condition is the primary signal.

2
Closeness to target price

Within the same condition band, cars whose fair price sits closest to the midpoint of your budget range appear first. This surfaces the best-value options — not cars that technically fit but only at the extreme edges of your range.

4 Lifestyle Matching

After results load, the Match to Your Lifestyle banner lets you personalise the ranking. Select your primary use, driving style, passenger count, and key priorities — and results instantly re-rank to put the cars that best fit your profile at the top.

Each car model in our database carries a set of use-case tags (e.g. daily commute, family hauler, fuel-efficient, highway cruiser). When you set a lifestyle preference, we score every car 0–100 based on how many of its tags match your profile, then sort the entire candidate pool by that match score before trimming to 24 results. This means the best lifestyle match from 300+ candidates surfaces — not just the best condition match from the first 24.

Primary Use

Daily city commute, family car, highway, off-road, commercial, or status vehicle. Filters the entire model pool, not just visible results.

Driving Style

Easy-going city driver, spirited/sporty, or economy-focused. Matches models known for the ride character you prefer.

Passengers

1–2, 3–5, or 6–7 people. Surfaces appropriately sized vehicles — compact hatchbacks vs. 7-seater crossovers.

Key Priorities

Multi-select: fuel economy, low maintenance cost, strong resale value, safety, technology, boot space, ground clearance, and more.

5 Tips for Better Results

💡
Widen your range by 5–10 lacs

Fair prices include the negotiation buffer. A 30–40 lac budget often surfaces 28–38 lac cars that can be negotiated into range.

💡
Use the condition grid, not just the headline price

Each card shows four prices. If only the Poor condition price fits your budget, factor in repair costs before committing.

💡
Click Assess → to deep-dive any result

The Assess link pre-fills the Fair Price Calculator with the exact car, variant, year, and estimated mileage — so you can verify the price against a real inspection before buying.

💡
Lifestyle filters search 300 candidates, not just the visible 24

When a lifestyle preference is active, the engine scores all matching cars from the full candidate pool, then shows the best 24. You're not filtering an already-trimmed list.
