How to check

• Look along each panel in daylight from a low angle. A resprayed panel is often a slightly different shade, or has an orange-peel texture the others do not.
• Check rubber seals, window trims, badges and plastic clips for overspray: specks or a film of paint where there should be none.
• Open every door, the bonnet and the boot. Factory paint runs evenly into the edges and hinges; a resprayed panel often shows a masking line there.
• Uneven gaps between panels suggest one was removed, replaced or straightened.
• A paint thickness gauge settles it: a panel reading well above the rest of the car has been repainted. Gauges do not read plastic, so judge bumpers by shade.

What to count

• Count each panel once, however small the repaint on it.
• Bumper touch-ups are common and minor, but they still count.
• Leave the roof and pillars for the next question: they are structure, not panels.

Where they are

• Roof (chatt), including its edges above the doors.
• A-pillars beside the windscreen, B-pillars between the doors, C-pillars beside the rear glass.
• Front rails and strut towers: under the bonnet, either side of the engine, and the domes where the front suspension mounts.
• Boot floor and the panel behind the rear bumper (boot lock pillar).

How to check

• Open the doors and look at the pillars and sills for weld marks, filler, wrinkled metal or sealant that does not match the factory beads.
• Lift the boot mat. The floor should be flat with neat factory seam sealer; ripples or fresh paint mean a rear impact.
• Under the bonnet, compare left and right. Rails and strut towers should be mirror images, with the small round dimples of factory spot welds.
• If you cannot tell "repainted" from "repaired", choose Not sure and have it inspected. This is the one question worth paying an inspector to answer.

How to check

• Ask plainly whether the car has been in an accident and whether an insurance claim was made. Hesitation is an answer too.
• The airbag (SRS) warning light should come on at start and go out within seconds.
• Seat belts that will not retract, or an airbag cover that looks or feels different from the rest of the trim, point to a deployment.
• A new radiator, condenser or headlights on an older car hint at a front impact.
• On imported cars, an auction grade of R or RA means the car was repaired after an accident; the sheet's body map marks where.

How to check

• Walk round slowly in daylight, then crouch and look along each side. Dents show up as a break in the reflection.
• Run a fingernail across a scratch: if it catches, the scratch is through the clear coat and needs paint, not just polish.
• Check the lower doors and bumper corners, where parking marks collect.

How to check

• Look under the doors along the sills (foot boards), inside the wheel arches, at the bottom edge of the boot lid and under the boot mat.
• Check the windscreen in the driver's line of sight: a chip there can spread into a crack.
• Look at headlight and taillight lenses for cracks, yellowing or moisture inside.
